TryHackMe
Has anyone learned cybersecurity from TryHackMe? Any particular modules you would recommend or any strengths and weaknesses of the platform?

TryHackMe is great, I really like the amount of free labs and learning they provide, I completed about 20 rooms on their, I stopped cause I hate reading.....
Overall pretty beginner to intermediate friendly
Its great to get on some hands on practice
And enforces your learning
You dont have to follow a certain road map imo (which is paid)
You can just look up the rooms youre interested in Red teaming/Blue Teaming, etc
And start with easy
Then finish as many easy as you could
And then start with medium to hard
But I wouldn't replace it with your labs
Make sure youre doing labs and projects
Because, from my knowlege.....tryhackme could careless if u have 1000 rooms done
But its great for personal self improvement, cybersec wise
well if it aint oni
Who's you :salute:
Oh same server
Yessir
Theres other websites you can consider that are also free but personally....I like tryhackme over hackthebox
Also dont half ass tryhackme
Make sure youre doing rooms fully, dont let other be like "I have 100 rooms done 🤓"
Its a self pace thing, not a race
get yourself a tryhackme subscription do a ton of them and gain the knowledge and once you gain it you move onto hackthebox that's where the fun shit is
depends what you mean by "cybersecurity"
tryhackme is a very good resource for learning how to pentest but it doesn't give you much of the fundamentals of blue teaming
it's very good for red teams sure but it doesn't give you much for blue teaming, all you can really do is think about the particular vulnerability that you exploited, and a lot of the time the vulnerability was something very basic like an unpatched version or an unsanitized input or something
id say tryhackme is a good resource, but also watch some videos on basic cybersecurity, and try to apply them to the servers you hack in THM
thank you all :)
tryhackme is a amazing way to learn hands on cyber security! i recommend folling one of the provided paths
Id say dont get the subscription
Just yet, in case you dont like it
like you said it's a lot of reading
yeah, I personally dislike that
but then again....im kind of a lazy learner 💀
well i like the hands on stuff
i think i learn best by doing
That's how am as well
i lose focus if it's a video or long articles n stuff
I hate none practical knowlege 😅
For sure
soo with all of that said
would you recommend any of the pathways or rooms or whatever
💀
Like i said, I only have 30 rooms done (which is like....5% of what tryhackme has in store for users)
Like i said
Choose blue Teaming/red Teaming stuff (what ur interested in) and start out with easy rooms
Finish all the easy free rooms you can
i thought rooms and reading was separate
And then medium level to high level rooms
No
that rooms were like the actual doing part and the rest is reading
Every module is a room
oh i see
Labs, reading, CTF too I belive
That's how tryhackme tracks what you do
That sounded nefarious haha
But u get the idea
i will try my best
Best of luck! :salute:
thank you :salute:
following* 😭
yo how did you start learning cybersecurity? you mentioned you started reading tryhackme stuff but it was a lotta reading so i'm curious if you started another way or what let you know you were interested? because i wanna get into the doing cybersecurity part and maybe you have to read and read and read b4 you can do anything but im gonna be unhappy if i read all of this and i dont actually like cybersecurity 😭
just looking to see what you did bc maybe it'll help me figure this issue out
I'm in college for it but you could learn from YouTube, there's tons and tons of free videos, id say just check the information so their not half assing the tutorials. One way to check, by comments (assuming their somewhat popular) and dont fall for "Here's u can get a job in cybersec in just 6 months!!"
Can you? Maybe....if ur willing to put 15 hrs a day of learning everyday for 6 months lol but its false BS stuff.
Like I said, find ur niche, blue Teaming, red Teaming, grc, etc and look up videos on those
Learning how network works, what is Kali Linux and how it works, what tools kali uses, how to use Nmap....stuff like this all adds up to ur learning
Look up how to do labs, such as a hacking lab where u make 2 to 3 vulnerable machines and 1 hacker machine and haxk into them
Theres a lot of stuff you can learn
Tryhackme is good but im too ADHD for it lol
But cybersecurity is boring in general, its not that...exciting
Even when you get it a job, ur just looking at logs all day lol for most part
Only fun roles are pen testing (minus documenting) and physical security
At least imo
Cybersecurity isnt that sexy as people make seem to be and ur not gonna be making 6 figures with one cert....sometimes you'll be so unlucky and have 5 certs but not enough experience or networking (Who u know) u just gotta keep at it, it can a depressing....career at first
No one likes to mention the bad side of it cause no one likes to hear that and it makes sense
I've mentioned this in a different sever but companies are more likey to hire Managers son that installed Kali once then u who has 5 to 10 certs under your belt with projects
A bit dramatic but not too far off, thats how bad the market is. .....but its a battle u gotta fight for
Ur going against AI, outsourcing, and everyone else including this sever
Its an endless battle but once u get in that job door, its....kinda smooth from their for the most part
I'm in the same boat as you too lol but tbh im tryna finish my AS
And some certs before applying to anything
so what are you going for? and what's physical security 😅
The role im studying is called GRC = Governance, Risk & Compliance
basically set of rules, the risks threat possess and compliance (following the policies)
Physical Security is basically robbing a company (physically, like getting into the company's premises and hack their things from the inside) with written permission from a company
tryhackme was just talking about that
so you'd just make sure everything is up to the standard?
i've taken two tests and they say cyber security engineer -- is that an interesting field. if not im gonna mess around with some other hobbies ☠️
Yeah there's multiple rooms for GRC role, kinda useless for none GRC
Yeah, pretty much
Cyber Engineer is for sure but....hence the name, it's complicated
it's kind of "jack of all trades"
u know how to know coding and automation well on top of red/blue stuff
Cybersec woulnd't be a hobby, it's a ✨ lifestyle ✨
jkjk but if u dont devote like 70% of ur time to it, then ur not gonna make it anywhere
just personal take
idk if i like this stuff enough to devote a crazy amount of time to it
thank you for providing some perspective
No worries, the field is very hard and not for everyone, It took me awhile to see if i really like this field or not
and I love it, but I hate the job market aspect of it
and u could treat it like a hobby, hackers and threat actors are constantly increasing their game, u can protect yourself by learning this stuff without grinding it too much and hey...maybe down the line you do wanna do it, u never know
Np!
ive answered versions of this before so ill give a quick explanation
THM is very good for learning pentesting but it doesn't teach you much about blueteaming
it doesn't teach much of the fundamentals
i think THM and other pentesting programs can be very good for having a well-rounded education, but it complements being trained in some of the more fundamentals
hope this helps!
I just completed the cybersecurity 101 learning path on THM yesterday. Some modules felt incomplete and I needed to look up walkthroughs to get better hints. But overall it’s a good starting point.
In my opinion it teaches you blue teaming better than red teaming
Because they have more content on it at least. Haven't personally tried a lot of it, but there's a lot of variance in the topics
I might even go so far as to say that their blue teaming is on par with HTB's
U sound like a salesman for sum reason
If they hire me to become one I'll be the best 😉
sales will increase 10%
no... minimum 30% 🙂
I am so good at deescealaation
In a bad way tho 💔🥀
Thm's is a bit inferior i think
