Dell latitude 7490 not charging
So I was using my laptop for the whole day on a bed, then it stopped charging, so I thought maybe the charger broke. So I bought a new one, but that didn't fix it, so I tried replacing the DC jack on the laptop but to no avail. I have tried holding d and then pressing m. I tried removing the battery and trying without it. Also, for context, my battery could not hold any charge, so I kept the laptop plugged in all the time, but I replaced the battery while replacing the charger. But I used the charge that was on the battery to check if the battery works. So I currently can not boot the laptop at all. When I plug it in there is no white light in bottom right but when I press the power button the keyboard backlight lights up and the button right lights glows white for 1 sec and then turns off again. So I think it could be the DC circuit but do yall have any other things I could try?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Seems like a hardware components issue to me
If it was booting, you could have tried tinkering around with the boot sequence to check the RAM for corruption or something, but since it's not starting at all it's more indicative of something that's gone wrong with the hardware
In which case you'd need a technician for assistance to check if the power components connected to the motherboard aren't bent or frayed or something
If you replaced the DC jack, I'm assuming you had some wiring diagram. Do you have a voltmeter to use to check for any issues? I'd say check for shorts, but you'd probably know when you plugged it in lol.
I have had this issues with this gen of latitudes and its usually a short on the MOBO, not worth trying to fix if money is a concern because the chance you break something else is high
unless you want a fun project, ladittudes still today are some of the most repairable laptops
Agreed, they're great, but if it's that, you could replace the motherboard if you can get one for cheap and you have no other options
It did boot fine when I put the new battery in but the battery is probably on 0% so that's why it isn't booting
The problem is its not charging the battery
Hmm. Maybe if you can buy a replacement battery
idk how that works or if you're going to find any that's compatible
Laptops generally operate just fine on AC power without a battery
It has been that way for a long time lol
I just pulled out the old DC jack and plugged the new one in
Why would I need a new battery when I just bought one?
You wouldn't
That's the thing, it doesn't do anything on AC power no life at all
So I'm guessing something is wrong with the charging circuit?
Do you have a reference guide that you used? I'd probably look around the motherboard and see if there are any popped caps or any signs of arcing
Or the power delivery
I just looked up parts people video on how to replace it
Why I replaced it cause one of the cables on the DC jack was pulled out somehow
I did also try a new charger but that didn't work
Tho would a USB-C charger work?
Or do I have to just replace the motherboard or the whole laptop?
@w33t
How much would a cheap motherboard cost?
If it has USB-C charging capabilities, yes, but double check before you stick a charger in there. In theory, it's supposed to negotiate the power before sending any, but you never know
You could try replacing the motherboard, but I don't know the labor involved, nor the cost. It depends on the laptop
It can be up there because so many parts are soldered on, like the CPU. It might almost be worthwhile to just buy a whole new laptop if the motherboard is dead
I don't think the motherboard is dead cause it did work on battery power when I installed the new battery
It just doesn't charge
I ordered a USB-C charger 65W
I hope it works
I forgot the part where you said you replaced it 😅
Maybe that new charger will work
You mentioned a DC barrel jack. Does your laptop specifically support USB-C charging?
It supports USB-C and DC charging
I hope the charger I ordered works
If if it was the motherboard the traces/components providing power could have shorted
leaving it still working if the battery holds charge
Solution
THE CHARGER WORKED!!!!
