Contact the cellular carrier that your friend has and explain the situation. There may/may not be a fee involved for replacing the SIM and maybe for repairing the damaged SIM slot.

What could be the cause though?

Likely the APU (All Processing Unit) and/or the battery could have overheated. Depending on the iPhone model, the heat could have been easily spread to the SIM reader if it's nearby on the iPhone's motherboard and could have caused the SIM card to melt

No problem, if the SIM melting is because of the battery, it would probably be a good idea for the battery to be replaced so the risk of the SIm card melting is lower.

Or perhaps not use the phone on the charger anymore lol

That is a good idea, because the electricity heats up the battery a bit while charging, and the heat from the APU can speed up battery decay and can increase the chance of the battery failing/overheating if the phone gets used too much while charging.

I'll just say from experience while taking apart an old phone. I also watch a lot of tech YouTubers in my free time. Maybe a little Mythbusters.

how do you know it's an iphone again :wtf: that's... not what APU stands for you probably have a warranty claim against the company, you should definitely call your carrier about getting a new sim card

All Processing Unit sounds much cooler than Accelerated Processing Unit though
