- i shared the directory

what VM app and what OS are you trying to run in it?
if its virtualbox and some (relatively) recent(ish) version of windows, inset the guest additions add on into the VM and then install and restart, should be working from there

you can just use a normal ftp or ssh fileshare
setup a filezilla server on the vm or an ssh or vsftpd server on your macbook
and then access it through your vm network
